Description

Adieu (Piano Quartet No 1)

Adieu, meaning ‘farewell’, is a reflective work with several melodic ideas being shared around the ensemble.

The piano introduces the first melody in the opening and this is then taken up by the viola. This should be played as directed but with legato phrasing.

At bar 33, the piano introduces the second melodic idea. The accompanying instruments need to be lighter at this point until the melody is taken by the violin.

The modulation to E major at bar 5, introduces a new melodic idea and this needs to be bright and is shared between the violin and cello. The original tempo needs to be maintained through this section until the return to the original melody in the coda at 73.

Overall, Adieu is a fluent and harmonic work which has a sense of melancholy throughout.

Please enjoy learning and performing Adieu.
