Peregrini fortium for Orchestra and Rhythm Section

Peregrini fortium (Valiant Pilgrims) is a contemporary work for orchestra and rhythm section. The work has been composed for the dedicated music students at Newcastle Grammar School for their tour of the USA in December 2013.

I have attempted to fuse together classical, rock and some jazz elements in this piece. A saxophone section has also been added for extra tonal colours in keeping with the style of the work.

The accents and expression should be adhered to and the quaver rhythms in the electric bass are the driving force behind the work. Melodic ideas are shared around the orchestra and should always be the focus of each section.

I have used the lyrics of a very old English Hymn, He Who Would Valliant Be and taken the melody of Ralph Vaughn Williams for the slow section of the work. This is our School Hymn. The melody is familiar to all students at Newcastle Grammar School and the last line of the final verse is: “to be a pilgrim”.

The overall approach should be one of energy and enthusiasm when performing this work with an air of melancholy in the hymn section.

Enjoy!
